Drive any street in Minnetonka, Edina or Eden Prairie and you will see them: Colorado blue spruce planted in the 1970s and 80s that are now bare from the bottom up, white pines that lost a top in a storm, and rows of arborvitae that gave up after a hard winter. When those trees come down, the stump that is left is a different animal from a maple or an oak, and it is worth knowing how before you get a quote.

Why So Many Spruce and Pine Are Coming Down in the West Metro
Colorado blue spruce was the default evergreen in Twin Cities subdivisions for decades. It is not native here, it does not love our humid summers, and after 30 or 40 years a lot of them are in rough shape. The usual culprits are needle-cast fungi such as Rhizosphaera and Cytospora canker, which kill branches from the bottom up until the tree is a bare trunk with a green tuft on top. The University of Minnesota Extension has a good rundown of spruce diseases if you are trying to decide whether yours is worth saving.
Pines have their own problems. Scotch pine planted as windbreaks is prone to pine wilt and needle diseases, and big white pines around Lake Minnetonka lose tops and limbs in the summer storms we covered in our post on storm-damaged trees. Add in winter burn on arborvitae and it is no surprise that a good share of our calls in Wayzata, Orono and Shorewood are for evergreen stumps.
The pattern is usually the same: a tree service takes the tree down, leaves a stump cut somewhere between ankle and knee height, and the homeowner is left with a wide, sappy disc surrounded by a circle of dead grass where the tree shaded everything out.
What a Conifer Stump Looks Like Underground
Spruce and pine build root systems differently, and that changes how the grind goes.
Spruce: wide, shallow and flared
Spruce roots are shallow. Most of the structural roots sit in the top foot or two of soil and spread out in a plate, which is why spruce are the trees you see tipped over with a big pancake of soil and roots standing up after a windstorm. At the stump, that means a broad flare. A spruce that measures 18 inches across at cutting height can easily have a 30-inch flare at ground level once you account for the buttress roots, and we measure the stump where it meets the soil, not at the top of the cut.
Those surface roots also run a long way. It is normal to find spruce roots an inch or two under the turf 10 or 15 feet from the trunk. We grind the main flare and the roots that are in the way of a level lawn, and the smaller ones rot in place.
Pine: deeper and more compact
Pines tend to root deeper, especially on sandy soils like you find in parts of Eden Prairie, Chanhassen and Shakopee. The flare is usually tighter and the roots drop down rather than sprawl, so a pine stump often grinds cleaner and leaves less of a root maze at the surface. The trade-off is that the heart of a pine stump is dense with pitch, and a big one still takes real time.
Neither one comes back
Here is the good news. Conifers almost never resprout from a stump. There are no dormant buds in the root collar the way there are on maple, elm, boxelder or buckthorn. Once the tree is cut, the stump and roots are dead and will begin to rot. So unlike the fights we describe in our buckthorn post, grinding a spruce or pine is not about stopping regrowth. It is about getting rid of a trip hazard, reclaiming the space, and making the lawn mowable again.
How Spruce and Pine Stumps Grind
Softwood is called softwood for a reason. Spruce and pine chip much more easily than oak or hard maple, so the cutting wheel moves through them quickly. A mid-size spruce stump that would take an hour in oak can be ground in a fraction of that time. We still take it to our standard depth of 4 to 6 inches below grade, and deeper if you plan to replant in the same spot.
What slows things down is not the wood, it is everything around it:
- Pitch and sap. Fresh pine and spruce are full of resin. It coats the teeth, packs into the chip pile, and makes the grindings heavy and sticky. Cleanup takes longer than the grind on a fresh-cut pine.
- The flare. On spruce, the flare and buttress roots roughly double the area we have to cover compared with the trunk diameter.
- Dead zones and debris. Old spruce shade out everything beneath them, and that bare circle collects rock, edging, old fence wire and landscape fabric. Anything metal near the stump gets pulled before we start.
- Tight spacing. Spruce windbreaks and privacy rows were often planted 8 to 12 feet apart. That is fine for the grinder, but it means we are working near fences, sheds and property lines, and we walk the row first.
Rows are also the one situation where conifer jobs are consistently cheaper per stump. The machine is already on site and the stumps are a few steps apart, so the setup cost is spread across all of them. What Spruce and Pine Stump Grinding Costs
Like every stump, price comes down to diameter at ground level, access, and how many stumps are on the ticket. Our general range across the west metro is roughly $3 to $7 per inch of diameter, with a minimum for a single small stump. Softwood sits toward the lower end of that range because it grinds fast, but a spruce flare can push the measured diameter higher than you expect, so the two effects often cancel out.

After the Grind: Lawn, Beds and Replanting
The acidity myth
People worry that pine and spruce grindings will turn the soil acidic and nothing will grow. In practice the effect is small and short-lived. Fresh chips of any species are close to neutral, and the composting process does not meaningfully change lawn soil pH in the amounts involved. What actually stalls grass over a ground stump is nitrogen tie-up as the wood breaks down, and that is the same for pine as it is for oak. The dead circle
Under a big spruce there is usually a bare ring where nothing grew for years. The needles are not the reason, the shade and root competition are. Once the tree and stump are gone, that ring reseeds like any other bare spot. Rake off the needle layer, add a thin lift of topsoil and seed in the mid-August to mid-September window or in spring.
Replanting evergreens
If you are replacing a spruce row with new evergreens, plant offset from the old stump locations rather than directly in the ground chips, and ask us to grind deeper where the new trees will go. Arborvitae, Juniper and Other Evergreen Shrubs
Not every conifer stump is a tree. A lot of the evergreen work we do is the small stuff: a hedge of arborvitae that browned out over winter, foundation junipers that outgrew the house, or a yew that finally had to go. These are small in diameter but there are usually a lot of them, and hand-digging a dozen arborvitae stumps with their fibrous root mats is a weekend you will not enjoy.

Do you grind arborvitae and juniper stumps?
Yes. Evergreen shrub stumps are small and shallow, and we can typically clear an entire hedge line in an hour or so, leaving the bed ready to replant.
Does the stump need to be cut low before you come?
